Info on Direct Stock Purchase Plans?

I want to start investing small amours of money at first with Direct Stock Purchase plans with someone like Computershare i just wanted to check that it was fine to invest this way with me living in the UK.

Direct Stock Purchase Plans are offered by companies directly and you often have to have a share in their company to qualify for them. Some brokers like Computershare will help you with the paperwork with enrolling in the programs and handle all the details for you. But being in the UK, you should find a UK broker that can do it rather than a US broker. You really don't want to involve the American IRS, certainly not without a SSN. As a foreigner, you can apply for a US SSN, it'll just be stamped "Legal Alien Not Permitted To Work", without the SSN, the US broker would have to with hold a substantial amount of your money for taxes, much of which you are entitled to but can only claim back by filing a non-resident alien tax report which is why you would need the SSN. Even then they have minimal with holdings for foreigners. Just find a UK broker, they can do the same as the US brokers and the tax situation will be much simpler. Check with UK financial periodicals for the advertisements by UK brokers.
