What can I do if I buy a computer with 8gb RAM?

I can't imagine any thing using more than 1.5gb ram... What would I need 8gb for?

Well, you can have a 64bit machine with video editing software running in the background. Dane

If you can't imagine using more than that, then you've never used your computer for anything more than browsing the internet and using Office. Vista's recommended RAM requirement is 2 gigs. If you want to play games a Vista machine, 4 gigs is highly recommended. The minimum requirements are only going to go up as technology imporves. We have an SQL server at work running 64 gigs of RAM and 4 individual quad core processors in it if that gives you any kind of point of reference.

In 1981, Bill Gates said that 640k "ought to be enough for anyone". Ever since then, his OS has lead the way in pigging out hardware and requiring more RAM. This is being typed on a machine with 4GB RAM (quad core 64 bit), but it is also running several virtual machines right now (one of which is running Windows). Yes, I'll be expanding to 8GB pretty soon. Its not hard to get the machine to the point where it is paging like the dickens because it lacks enough RAM.

Play high resolution games depending on your processor.

This is a complex question, with a fairly easy answer...allot. At 1.5 gigs of ram, you dont even reach the recomended requirements for vista. If you were a gamer, 1.5 gb of ram would probably put you in tears in under a minute, just by your lack of capabilities. With todays technologies, 6gb will run just about anything at top efficiency, especially if it is dual channel or tri channel. The thing is, why buy for today's technology, when tomorow, something better and faster will come out. Your better to be prepared, so that when the time comes, you arent behind. Another important thing to remember is that windows only supports up to 3.8 gb of ram at the 32 bit level. if you are running 64 bit though, you wont find you have the same issue, (as the 64 bit archetecture supports over 16 petaflops of ram, and windows right now supports 64 gigabites). Also, at a server level, 8 gb of ram is minimal. In the data center where I work, we have servers with over 8 cores, and up to 128 gigs of ram, and we are looking at doing upgrades because of our hardware limitations. Hope that helps.

you can use 8gb for games i guess but thats like games with bad softwares you dont need 8gb for much its just so more people will buy it thinking "omg!! 8gb ram!!!" when they dotn even need it buy a 4 gb it will work fine ,lol even 2gb is fine and 1.5 is just right
